Those 90's forehands were so clunky hahaha. They really kept the elbow tucked in for some reason. It would be a no-no these days.

Loosening the grip is key to a more fluid stroke.

Thanks! I always get stuck when hitting the ball, with both my arms bent and stuck and it feels like I am pushing the balls. I think I should find a better contact point and practice the from inside to outside

He speaks the truth. I’m glad to see people with actually good technique giving tips and explanations. Too many UA-camrs eg intuitive tennis clearly only has intuition and nothing else.

I have discovered this timing through trial and error and have come to the same rhythm as you so well describe. I usually make sure I have started step 2 just prior to the ball bouncing and smoothly transition to step 3 ( drop and throw) thereafter. I am able to sustain hitting against the wall a lot longer if I follow this rhythm

Wow this is an amazing video. Moved my grip over a bit as suggested and could really get great topspin and ironically it seems to have made my backhand slice better too. Love the detail you bring, I can work on one or two things, and it always feels unnatural at first but after a day or two it clicks.

I think he means for thr unit turn, dont turn past your hip (i.e. more than 180 degrees), but then release and drop racquet head back and swing through

Of course you have to use your legs bending your knees with the strike of the ball. Come up with your body while rotating the hips all while hitting low to high.

Watch how high Sinner’s follow through is before he finishes his swing on his forehand. You can see in slo mo how his forearm covers his chin or mouth. This gives massive topspin.

I'm thinking maybe this trick can also be used on the serve, or even on the forehand, but the gestures have to be changed.Because that can also make the drop shot more deceptive.

Hi Vincent, I really enjoyed the intro, and seeing you hitting balls for more than 2 seconds really shows us you're the real deal. When you see somebody ( you ) hit balls like you did for about 1 minute ( *without* cutting the film ) it gives us a really good insight into how good and "regular" you are. Thanks for doing that, you've never shown that in an of your other videos and I really thought that added a lot to this video.

AT 4:37 that is not a continental grip that you are describing. The wrong bevel is indicated. Please change video or you will confuse people.

Brooke's take back is excessively complicated and one of the reasons why she needs to play so far back. She's playing more than 10 feet from the baseline. If she were to move up to the court she would feel rushed. The one-handed backhand cannot be hit late and you must simplify everything. Every unnecessary movement loses fractions of a second that really matters. Her big looping forehand also will make her feel rushed when playing closer to the baseline. I would try to coach her out of these bad forms.

Brilliant video Doc, extremely helpful, as indeed all your videos are. May I please offer a suggestion for the backhand instruction, and probably applicable for other videos. You break down the backhand very well, discuss the steps perfectly but what would be very useful is a super slow motion clip of you hitting the backhand and discussing all the steps as they occur in the clip so we can see the entire stroke with the finished product, the ball leaving the strings and the follow through. Could show this clip after you complete the step by step discussion and the super slow motion will help us see how the steps merge together. Just a suggestion.

If you have a semi western or western grip by default you have to go up, you can't go across and if the ball is at hip or higher you still need to go up. In order to go up must start somewhat lower. With a full western grip there is no way to avoid this low high / path with racket. If you watch Nadal or Sock, you will see this how it works.

This is almost complete garbage and deals with one type of ball we get, and this monologue doesn’t even deal with it correctly. First of all, your racket is above your hand throughout the swing (wrist cocked up). So you forgot to mention receiving a rising ball vs falling ball. You cannot hit falling or low balls with your wrist cocked up. Since the side spin we impart of the ball is every bit as important as the topspin or slice we impart, the racket head in relation to hand is vital. If we get a low ball, we better swing, at least somewhat from low to high. If we want to loop a ball (the topspin lob being the ultimate loop) we better swing to high. Pros receive balls on the rise mostly. That is the main reason that Medvedev and Thiem stand so far back in the court. They are descending ball preferers. Average players receive almost exclusively descending balls and need to drop the racket head below the ball. Since you can’t possibly believe that pros watch this stilted delivery, you need to talk to searching, average players. The most important spin for most players is hook spin. It allows the hitting of sharp crosscourt shots (winners and passing shots). Sidespin also adds a second level of insurance against hitting long. This can only be done with the racket head below the hand. The height of the follow through is the function of the trajectory you want. And finally, it is not the wrist that rolls over the ball. It is the forearm. And sometimes even the shoulders. The wrist follows. Creating content comes with some responsibility. It is not about your monetizing the purchase of a camera. The people searching for improvement do it with good intentions. It appears you do not.
